A couple more stories have emerged on Data Loss that you may or may not have come across over the past few weeks.
The first was from a few days ago, advising that Zurich Insurance in South Africa were backing up to Tapes and they lost one of them. This tape held over 1 million documents, over 50,000 related to UK policy holders who have been informed of the loss!

The second headline shows once again the security risks & flaws using Cloud based Systems.
T-Mobile USA provide a syncing service on one of their devices that syncs your personal information to Microsoft servers in a Cloud Based Storage Centre. Apparently the data was lost because they attempted to upgrade a storage array without backing it up first!

Depositit have always been against single server backup systems, faceless cloud locations and the cheap backup solutions that have come onto the market. They are not secure and time after time we are reminded about their security flaws.
Depositit always saves data to a minimum of 2 separate locations and have trading relationships with all 3 of our data centres, we also own and manage all of our infrastructure in order to retain as much control as possible.
There’s no denying that times are tough at the moment, and “cheap alternatives” are being sourced for just about everything. Its one thing replacing your Cornflakes with a supermarket’s own brand but no business should be taking risks with their IT Support and Backups.
